Day 3....

Sunday, March 11, 2007

I am so glad we got to .Nairobi in the evening.  The time difference between Kenya and America is 8 hours!!!  Which is why my blog says Sunday…get it?  As a matter of fact I think that is why I was able to bounce back the next day.  Well, that and adrenaline…LOL

My bed is very comfortable, there is a mosquito net around it too.  At that point I wish I had a travel partner to share this with…..maybe it was the romantic aspect of the mosquito net that made me all warm inside…….lol  I dunno………

For breakfast I have poached eggs, bacon and spinach.  I know you are thinking spinach?  Well I soon found out that they serve spinach or kale with everything?  Why?  I have no idea.

Since we have a free day, we decided to take a walk around downtown Nairobi.  I notice the air quality is wonderful.  This is because most people walk or ride bikes.  They even have bike taxisJ  My sinus issues are non existent here and I am glad about that……LOL

We meet two young women who are dressed in business suits.  Apparently they are on their way to church.  Great!!  They are warm and we converse as we walk with them.  After about 20 minutes of walking someone asks about how far are we going?  "Oh just a few kilometers" (that's how they measure everything in Kenya).  A woman who came with us informed us that she has to check out of the hotel in 1 hour.  I'm thinking why the heck did you decided to come with us then?  So we inform the gracious women that we must return in the other direction.  They are sad but understand….their spirits were so comforting.

We spent the day just enjoying the sights.  I was a sponge just soaking in everything.  Wow, cows just roam free huh……lol  Yep they are everywhere.  We met other people and initially everyone we meet speaks Swahili to me.  After that happened a few times I become embarrassed that I can't speak the native tongue.  I'm also repeatedly asked for my "home name"….I say Lena and they shake their heads….lol  I smile cause I realize that they look at me and they don't see an America……..they see their sister…….

Day 4 tomorrow………come back………..:-)

Day One...

Well my mother just dropped me off at the Indianapolis airport.  It's been a long time since the last time I flown, actually it was pre 9/11.  I know there has to be a ton of security checks and other things.  In my mind I thought as long as I get there 1 hour before my flight I should be okay.  The thing is I was suppose to be at the airport 2 hours in advance, didn't figure that out until I got there and everyone was already there.  Ooooops....good thing I live 10 minutes from the airport...lol

So here's the schedule....Indianapolis to Detroit, Detroit to Amsterdam and Amsterdam to Nariobi, Kenya.  I make sure to take my Dramamine because I don't fly well without it and this 23 hour flight (with transfers) is going to be a long ride....

We are moments from landing in Amsterdam and my legs go numb.....boy thank goodness I have an aisle seat.  The food we were served was very good.  I've never travelled international up until this point but I definitely don't remember food this good on domestic flights...lol

We arrive in Amsterdam at 6:00 a.m., oh man.......this is way too early....but at this point I'm still running on adrenline.  We decided to have breakfast at a cafe and is that Marvin Gaye I hear in the background?  Then I hear the Gap Band....it's been a long time since I hear, "Just because you're not for real...."(if you don't know what song I'm talking about look it up...lol) The food is great but I'm not that hungry, we were stuffed on the plane...

So we catch our connecting flight and are on our way to Nairobi.  The GPS tracking system is great.....it showed exactly when we crossed the Atlantic Ocean, Paris, etc..... Also I watch Dreamgirls, Bobby, and Stranger Than Fiction.  Guess I didn't need my Ipod after all.:-)

I wake up in the middle of the night and look out my window.  I see the Full Moon hovering over the Atlantic Ocean.  The reflection against the water was beautiful!!!!!

It's 10:45 p.m. when we arrive in Nairobi.  We received our Visas and all of our luggage...........thank goodness:-)  Our driver picks us up and we head over to the Fairview hotel for the evening.  One thing though.....they drive on the right sideof the car, down the left side of the street.......LOL  Also, no speed limit signs, stop signs or stop lights............not that I can see.  This was confirmed by the other people I was with...........LOL

So I check in............am welcomed by the hotel staff warmly and dift off to la la land.........

Now check in tomorrow for the next update..........(I'll have pics up soon)
